In Humility Our Savior

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. - Matthew 11:29

The Story Behind the Painting

Gentle Savior depicts Jesus in a watercolor portrait style with long brown hair, a close-cropped beard, and serene blue-green eyes that meet the viewer with stillness and warmth. "I aimed to create a soft, serene image reflecting Christ's gentleness and humility. Earthy palette and blended brushstrokes help convey an approachable, tender presence. For me, this piece symbolizes how inviting Christ into our lives helps to fill in the 'brushstrokes' of our story. His light adds color, meaning, and purpose in our lives with his divine love.

About This Image

There is a stillness to this portrait that invites you to pause. Jay Bryant Ward renders Jesus Christ in right-facing profile, eyes downcast in quiet contemplation — a figure not of grandeur, but of gentle presence. The painterly blend of watercolor and oil technique wraps the figure in warm earth tones, soft mauves, and subtle blue-grey shadows, set against a luminous near-white background that seems to glow with its own inner light.

The impressionistic brushwork gives the image texture and warmth without demanding attention — it simply settles into a room and breathes. Whether hung in a bedroom, a living room, a prayer space, or gifted to someone navigating a season of faith, In Humility Our Savior brings a sense of peace that is both timeless and deeply personal.
